BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) is a well established holistic assessment for understanding and maximising how sustainable a building project can be. BREEAM sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the de facto measure used to define a building's environmental performance.
BREEAM Assessment’s:
- Management
- Health and wellbeing
- Energy
- Transport
- Water
- Materials
- Waste
- Land use and ecology
- Pollution
- Innovation.
Credits are awarded according to the impact of the development on the environment and marked independently against a set of strict criteria. Many credits are common between schemes, while some are exclusive to an individual development type. During the assessment, credits are added together within each sub category and an environmental weighting is applied to the scores. A single overall score is then produced which results in the building being rated on a scale of Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent, or Outstanding.
BREEAM In-Use
It consists of a standard; easy-to-use assessment methodology and a 3rd party certification process that provides a clear and credible route map to improving sustainability on existing buildings.
BREEAM In-Use has been developed to encourage better building management and targeted investment in existing building stock.
The BREEAM In-Use scheme enables building managers to self-evaluate the performance of their building(s) using the online BREEAM In-Use tool. Our BREEAM In-Use Auditor is trained to verify the data obtained by the building manager and issue the certificate themselves.
BREEAM In-Use is designed to:
- Reduce operational costs
- Enhance the value and marketability of property assets
- Give a transparent platform for negotiating building improvements with landlords and owners
- Provide a route to compliance with environmental legislation and standards, such as energy labelling and ISO 14001
- Provide opportunities to improve staff satisfaction with the working environment with the potential for significant improvements in productivity
- Demonstrate your commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
- Improve organisational effectiveness
The environmental performance of an organisation's built assets is a key factor in its sustainability credentials and carbon footprint. With soaring energy prices cutting energy, water, waste and other such costs can be a relatively easy way of improving profitability.
BREEAM Communities
BREEAM Communities helps the design team, developers and planners to improve, measure and independently certify the sustainability of developments at the neighbourhood scale or larger.
This scheme aims to influence sustainability at the early stages of project development through community engagement, site strategy and implementation in design. Following this, BREEAM assessments of buildings and homes will be completed.
